INNER CITY LIVING
This building had been converted into apartments in the early 2000s, and while it was large, spacious and light, the layout did not maximise the space.
The main feature of our redesign was the new steel stair which we treated largely as a piece of sculpture. Over three floors it adds character and drama to the apartment, especially as it was combined with a two level, floor to ceiling bookshelf, and flooded with light from above with new skylights. While it made for a challenging build the stair connects the three floors together in a way that was missing from the original design.
The new kitchen was treated as a piece of furniture, with the joiner featuring slim, stainless steel legs, and dark stained American White Oak cabinetry. A nice contrast with the brick work.
On the lower bedroom level, the rooms were reconfigured to create three generous bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry. And on the upper level, a relaxing TV room opens out onto the deck which we enclosed with tall, galvanized steel planters for privacy.
All of which, when combined with my clients’ keen eye for colour and vibrancy, has created a warm and inviting home, right in the very heart of the city.
