ISLAND BAY LOOKOUT
The brief for this project was to create a modern box on the back of an old state house. The clients were very keen to maximise the spectacular views out over Cook Strait.
Positioned on the crest of a hill, the extension had to be designed to withstand an extremely high wind and capture as much sunshine as possible into south-facing rooms.
The addition comprised of a new kitchen and dining area with adjacent deck, a double-height space and stairwell used to bring sunshine into the rooms and a first-floor living area to enjoy the view.
The folded Colorsteel roof that wraps around the upper level gives a protective feel to the addition, while heated concrete floors give the kitchen a solid grounded feel despite the exposed position of the site.
